The Atari 2600 prototype game, Sonar, was in development at the very start of the Atari 2600 (or maybe even before). Utilizing stereo sound to send separate ping-back notifications to two simultaneous players was a creative use of the 2600’s dual internal speakers — which were removed prior to launch as a cost-saving measure! Possibly the work of Brad Stewart (Breakout, Asteroids), this very, very early Atari game is now freely available to download and play. In this video, Jon walks you through this protoype and has a few more suprises in store, too!
