How TWO LINES and a DOT Created an Industry: The Origin of Pong | GenX Origin Stories

Before consoles, before cartridges, before anyone had a joystick in their living room, there was Pong. In 1972, a young Atari engineer named Allan Alcorn was handed what he thought was a simple training exercise by co-founder Nolan Bushnell, build a basic ping-pong game to learn the hardware. Instead, he created the game that launched the video game industry. In this video, we dig into the origin story of Pong, from its predecessors to its home console release through Sears in 1975 — and why this ridiculously simple game became the spark that put a controller in the hands of an entire generation. If you grew up chasing that little white square across the screen, this one's for you. #videogamehistory #atari #pong #atari-pong #arcadehistory #arcadegames - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com - CHAPTERS 00:00 - Intro 00:35 - Willie Higinbotham 01:43 - Ralph E Baer 02:19 - Magnavox Odyssey 03:49 - Atari 06:10 - Lawsuits 06:58 - Closing

Microsoft Gutted the House of DOOM?! + More Retro News!

Microsoft’s latest round of gaming layoffs has reportedly gutted id Software, drastically reducing the legendary studio behind DOOM and Quake—and co-founder John Carmack admits his prediction that Microsoft would be a good steward of the company isn’t aging particularly well. Plus, Activision and Imagic classics are packing a colorful new Super Pocket, someone has successfully booted Linux on the Atari Jaguar, and a massive LEGO Donkey Kong arcade set has apparently leaked ahead of its official reveal. We’re also covering Commodore’s surprisingly successful Callback phone, Atari’s new Centipede Swarm for Amazon Luna, four new Game Boy and Game Boy Advance additions to Nintendo Switch Online, and Valve’s simple official fix for the Steam Machine’s dreaded “Red Line of Death.” Which story surprised you the most? Why PHYSICAL Games Still Matter

Shop X-Arcade: https://genxgrownup.com/xgaming Digital games are convenient, but convenience isn’t ownership. Let’s talk about why physical media still matters, what changes when games are tied to accounts and storefronts, and why the things on our shelves still have a story to tell. - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com - CHAPTERS 00:00 Physical is Dead! 01:45 A Library 02:43 Meaning of Ownership 03:49 The Tradeoff 05:21 Fragility of Access 06:25 Temporary Menu 07:01 Preservation 09:01 Leaving Evidence 10:31 Not For Everyone 11:45 Not Just Nostalgia

I Didn’t Expect Intellivision VENTURE to Be THIS Good

Shop Fightbox: https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox After two straight weeks of Venture on Friday Plays, I thought I had a pretty good handle on how this arcade classic translated to home consoles. ColecoVision gave us the more faithful arcade-style version, and Atari 2600 showed how much of the idea could survive on much simpler hardware. But after those episodes, the comments kept coming in: “You need to try Venture on Intellivision.” So this week, the Summer of Venture continues with the Intellivision port — a version that may not be the most arcade-accurate, but might just be the one I had the most fun playing. - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com
