Atari has brought back the 2600 and 7800, and now there’s an Intellivision Sprint. So why not complete the collection with a ColecoVision+? I’d love a modern console that plays my original ColecoVision cartridges. But the more I think about what Atari could actually offer alongside one, the more complicated that dream becomes. Turning Atari’s Centipede into a board game sounds like a questionable idea—but Milton Bradley did far more than paste familiar artwork onto an unrelated children’s game. In this video, I set up and play the officially licensed 1983 Centipede board game, explore designer Bruce Whitehill’s unusual arcade research, and see how the segmented centipedes, mushrooms, cannons, spider and scorpion translate to the tabletop. The result includes some genuinely clever strategy and a wonderful sense of movement, although the spinner can occasionally leave one player at the mercy of some very unlucky turns. It may not recreate the speed of the arcade classic, but it clearly understands what made Centipede recognizable. Did you play this one—or another board game based on a classic arcade game? Polaris began as a Taito arcade game in 1980, but when Tigervision brought it to the Atari 2600, programmer Robert H. O’Neil did more than simply scale down the original. He added an entirely new phase that arcade players never experienced.
