CAVEMAN is a color tabletop electronic game released by the Japanese toy company TOMY in 1982. A prehistoric caveman must steal eggs from a fire-breathing dinosaur while avoiding flying dragons and volcanic lava. In each level of the game you must collect 8 eggs to advance to the next level. To steal an egg laid by the dinosaur move the caveman to the egg. After reaching the egg, the caveman must wait until it blinks before he can carry it back to the cave. If an egg is not taken away within 8 seconds, the egg will hatch into a baby dinosaur and escape. The first egg retrieved is placed at the entrance of the cave. When the caveman brings a second egg, the first one moves into the cave for 50 points. When a total of eight eggs have been put into the cave, 200 bonus points are added to the score, and the game advances to the next level. The dinosaur moves his head at random. The movements are slow in the amateur (AMA) game and faster in the professional (PRO) game. If the caveman approaches when the dinosaur is breathing fire, the caveman will lose one life. The caveman can temporarily knock out the dinosaur if he hits it with the axe when it's standing upright, earning the caveman 30 additional points and time to safely steal the egg. Dragons fly overhead looking to steal eggs from the entrance of the cave. In the amateur (AMA) game there is only one dragon, while the professional (PRO) game has two. If there is an egg at the entrance of the cave the dragon may swoop down to take the egg away, however a dragon can not steal an egg if the caveman is at the entrance guarding the egg. A dragon can be brought down before it passes over the entrance of the cave by a direct hit with the stone axe, scoring 10 points. At higher levels of the game a volcano erupts shooting hot lava into the air. Without warning they appear, intent on capturing your buildings and destroying your gun emplacement. First, the troop-carrying helicopters fly in dropping android paratroopers to test your defenses. Soon the sky is filled with fluttering helicopters and wave after wave of android paratroopers. They must be destroyed! Each paratrooper allowed to land on a building destroys a portion of that building. If three paratroopers land on a building. It will be totally destroyed and must be considered under commando control. Worse still, the androids can now tunnel towards your gun emplacement. Each paratrooper who lands on that building expands the tunnel. If they are not stopped, they will plant an explosive charge under the gun. In the midst of the battle, an aircraft may appear. It will drop a devastating bomb which can destroy all buildings and the gun emplacement. You must shoot it down or at least shoot the bomb it drops. Using hardware designed for calculators and powered by a nine-volt battery, the cars are represented by red LEDs on a playfield which covers only a small portion of the case. The audio consists of beeps. George J. Klose based the game on 1970s racing arcade video games and designed the hardware, with some hardware features added by Mark Lesser who also wrote the 512 bytes of program code. From a top-down perspective, the player controls a car on a three-lane track and moves between them with a switch. Opponent vehicles move toward the player, in an effect similar to vertical scrolling, and the player must avoid them. A second control shifts gears from 1-4, with the speed increasing for each. Auto Race was followed by other successful handheld sports games from Mattel, including Football and Baseball which were both programmed by Lesser. The design was tweaked into multiple other handhelds, including Missile Attack (1976), which became Battlestar Galactica Space Alert (1978) as a tie-in with the Battlestar Galactica TV series, and Ski Slalom (1980).
