Roc'n Rope is a 1983 platform video game developed and published by Konami for arcades. It was designed by Tokuro Fujiwara, later known for his career at Capcom. The player controls a flashlight and harpoon-gun equipped archaeologist who must ascend a series of rocky platforms to reach a phoenix bird. The player has to avoid ferocious man-sized dinosaurs and red-haired cavemen without any direct means of offense. The only ways to defeat the opponents are to either daze them with the flashlight, or wait for them to be suspended on a harpoon rope and cause them fall down, an element which adds a certain complexity to the game. Bumper controllers on the sides or a dial on the front are used to control the games depending on the game selected. There are three game types in the first model of the Video Pinball series: Pinball, Basketball, and Breakout. The first model is based on the single chip 011500-11/C011512-05 ("Pong-on-a-chip") produced by Atari. Video Pinball allows 7 games—4 pinball variations, a basketball game, and two versions of Breakout (Breakout and a variant called Break Away)—for one to two players. The unit provides digital on-screen scoring, automatic serves, and color graphics. Video Pinball uses a microcontroller and a small amount of RAM rather than the "Pong on a chip" IC's that had been used in the slew of pong machines Atari Inc. had been releasing. In 1986, Tecmo published the side-scrolling platformer, Rygar, to the arcades. I always enjoyed it, but found it to be pretty punishing and ended up costing me more tokens than I would've liked. So in 1990, when Atari released a translation of Rygar for the Lynx, I was immediately onboard. As a bonus, this version of Rygar turned out to have a gentler ramp-up in difficulty, meaning I could play longer and see more of the levels.
