Death Trap on Atari 2600 Is WAY Better Than You’ve Heard

Try Afterplay: https://genxgrownup.com/afterplay Death Trap for the Atari 2600 has a pretty rough reputation, but after spending real time with it, I think that reputation misses what makes this game so interesting. Released by Avalon Hill in 1983, Death Trap is a surprisingly sophisticated score chase built around a finite mission. You’re not just trying to survive until your reflexes fail — you’re trying to complete the mission as efficiently as possible, while managing damage, guiding your own torpedoes, avoiding shrinking shields, and maximizing your score along the way. In this Friday Plays, we take a closer look at one of the Atari 2600’s more unusual and overlooked games and find out why Death Trap deserves a lot more credit than it usually gets. #atari #retrogaming #atari2600 #genxgrownup - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com

Atari 2600 MARAUDER Takes BERZERK Somewhere Different

Marauder for the Atari 2600 may look a lot like Berzerk at first glance, but Tigervision’s 1982 maze shooter has some clever ideas of its own. There’s a real objective to your exploration, a temporary invincibility shield, faster-paced action, and a unique line-of-sight mechanic that changes when enemies are even visible. Originally based on a larger computer game from On-Line Systems — the company that would become Sierra On-Line — this 2600 version preserves the alien-base infiltration half of the original experience. In this Friday Plays, we take a closer look at Marauder, see how it compares to Berzerk, and find out whether this overlooked Atari game really has more going on than its simple appearance suggests. COSMIC COMBAT 1980 Handheld Was Made to Be BEATEN

Try Afterplay: https://genxgrownup.com/afterplay In 1980, Tomytronic released Cosmic Combat, a dedicated electronic handheld space shooter with one very specific goal: keep fighting until you reach victory. I recently thrifted this 46-year-old handheld, so in this video we clean it up, take a close look at this wonderfully retro piece of electronic gaming history, fire it back up, and find out what it takes to actually beat Cosmic Combat. Unlike so many early electronic games built around chasing an endless high score, this one gives you something to shoot for — and if we can reach 999 points, there’s even a little victory celebration waiting for us. Cosmic Combat was released by Tomy in 1980, made in Japan, and is generally identified as model 7602. It runs on four C-cell batteries and comes from that fascinating period when dedicated electronic games were finding all kinds of creative ways to put an arcade-style experience into your hands. Can this thrift-store survivor still deliver its intended victory 46 years later? Let’s find out. #retrogaming #handheld #arcade #genxgrownup - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com - CHAPTERS 00:00 Cosmic Combat 00:45 Galaxian Note 01:48 Hardware Tour 03:05 Manual 04:30 Clean-Up 06:10 Power On 06:45 Difficulty 1 07:48 Difficulty 2 08:30 Run to 999 12:20 Summary

CULTIC LIVE: Escaping The Crypts… Into The Chapel!

The CULTIC live playthrough continues as we finish off The Crypts and move straight into the next map, The Chapel — because apparently after surviving underground horrors, the logical next step is walking into a creepy chapel full of cultists. Great plan. No notes. Join the GXG crew as we keep pushing through CULTIC’s brutal retro FPS mayhem, blasting cultists, finding secrets, and probably making several questionable survival choices along the way. Come hang out live, chat with us, and help me survive the next round of old-school shooter chaos! #CULTIC #RetroFPS #BoomerShooter #HorrorFPS #LiveStream #PCGaming #IndieGames #RetroGaming #GenXGrownUp #GXG

This Isn’t Really ASTEROIDS… And That’s Okay

Shop Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox Fizz Creations has turned Atari’s classic Asteroids into a tiny LCD keychain game—but this definitely isn’t the arcade original squeezed onto a little screen. Instead, it takes the basic idea of Asteroids and reworks it into something much simpler, more like the vintage handheld games of the ’70s and ’80s. In this video, I unbox it, check out the hardware and controls, see how the LCD gameplay actually works, and find out whether this little Asteroids keychain is more than just a novelty.
