Atari Pulls the Plug on VCS—What Happens to Your Games? + More Retro News!

Atari is closing the modern VCS software store on February 1, 2027—but what happens to the console and your games afterward? George looks at the shutdown plans, the proposed OS update to remove reliance on Atari’s servers, and the homebrew possibilities beyond official support.

Then we step back into the ring with EA’s Fight Night revival, follow Croc onto Nintendo 64 through ModRetro, and explore RPCS3’s milestone of rating 80% of the PS3 library playable. A rare Pokémon Red prototype hits the auction block, Delta 2.0 brings Sega Genesis support, a Game Boy museum fits onto a cartridge, and Songbird’s Star Streak heads toward a wider Atari Jaguar release.

It’s Bit By Bit E157: eight stories about the games, hardware, and discoveries keeping retro gaming interesting.

What should Atari VCS owners do next—and could homebrew give the system a second life? Share your thoughts in the comments, and subscribe to GenXGrownUp for more retro gaming news!
