| Jon | Welcome back, Gen X Grown Up Podcast. Listener to this, the backtrack edition of the Gen X Grown Up Podcast. I’m John. Joining me as always, of course, my buddy George. Hey, man. |
| George | Hey, how’s it going, everybody? |
| Jon | Good. You know it wouldn’t be a show without Mo. Hey, Mo. How you doing? |
| Mo | Hey, how’s it going? |
| Jon | Good. You know, picking just the right holiday gift for the Gen X nerd in your life, that can be challenging, but we are here to help. Each year around this time, we release our geek gift guide. Once more this year, we’re going to run down some great gift ideas for the 2025 holidays, regardless of your budget. |
| Jon | This is a very popular episode each year. In fact, this year we did a video version of this. Different products, but a geek gift guide because it’s been so popular here on the podcast. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | Before we get into it this year, though, and some great selections in there, some surprises to me. It’s always interesting to see what avenue of your guys’ interest you pick for this guide. but We do have some fourth listener email. |
| Jon | Look, three of us are here. We might listen. If anybody else does, you are our fourth listener. And our fourth listener for this episode is Jonathan S. Nice name, Jonathan. Well done. |
| George | Ah, yeah. |
| Jon | Subject subject line of his email, 1985 Billboard Hits. |
| Mo | but |
| Jon | All right. |
| Mo | Oh, yeah, a recent. |
| Jon | Yes. Jonathan says, John, George, and Moe. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | You’re not last, George. i just had to point it out when happens because you always pointed out what it is. |
| George | I’m not lost. |
| Jon | So he says, George talked about, I want to know what love is being the default on the jukebox in the pool hall. It struck me that a pool hall was not a place where a lot of couples went for dates. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | I imagine that a pretty female pool player walked in during this song and she could, that she could hustle a lot of lonely guys. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | Probably. |
| Jon | It makes me wonder, was the pool hall owner and hustler splitting the take? Now, you have some insight on that probably, George, right? The pool hall owner? |
| George | Yeah, well, considering we own the pool hall, I think we might have known I wasn’t getting a cut. |
| Jon | That’s right, yep. you You probably were on the take. |
| George | I was not getting a cut, I’ll tell you that much. We didn’t have any pretty pool hall puzzlers, lady, friend, no. |
| Jon | No. |
| George | We didn’t have any of that. |
| Jon | No. |
| George | Like, no. theyre just Every guy in there was ugly as shit. |
| Jon | no No. No lovely ringers coming through your pool hall. |
| George | There were no… |
| Jon | No, just all scraggly dudes. |
| George | No, no, no, no. We didn’t… Believe me, if Jeanette Lee had stepped in that pool hall, trust me, I would not have given a shit what song was on the jukebox. I would have just given her all my money immediately. |
| Mo | you It’s funny how like yeah back then when we were kids, pool halls were not the place for dates, but now it is. like Now pool halls are all you know nice and fancy. |
| Jon | Right. Yeah. it’s a |
| George | I mean… |
| Jon | Well, now they’re a little less seedy. |
| Mo | and |
| Jon | Some of them. Some of them. Now, some of them. Some are still pool halls. |
| George | I’ll say it depends on your crowd, whether, because we had plenty of people bringing dates to our pool. |
| Jon | but |
| George | I’m not saying it was a good idea, but there were plenty of people bringing dates. |
| Jon | Oh, really? Yeah. |
| Mo | Like happily? True. |
| Jon | ah |
| George | I think it just depends upon your, your friend group more than anything. |
| Jon | Is this your first date? |
| George | Yeah. |
| Mo | true |
| Jon | Yeah, last date too. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | ah He wraps it up going, anyways, great job on the Billboard Hits of 1985, Jonathan S. Thank you, Jonathan. We appreciate you listening. |
| Mo | Very cool. |
| Jon | Appreciate you writing in. We love when the fourth listener takes time to drop us an email, let us know what they think of an episode they heard. If you would like your email, it’s featured. If you would like your email featured here on the show, you know it’s drop dead easy. |
| Jon | Just fire off a note to podcast at genxgrownup.com. Read every single one. And most of them, like Jonathan’s, will eventually make the show. All right, guys, get your wish list ready. |
| Jon | We’re going to jump into this geek gift guide for 2025 right after this quick break. |
| Jon | It’s time to kick off this 2025 Gen Grown-Up Geek Gift Guide. That’s a lot of G’s in the the title there. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | and And, you know, we adjusted our tiers this year. In previous years, we had left it pretty well alone. You know, it was 25, a 50, a 100, you know, things like that. We’d adjusted it over the years to, you know, one of them was any price you want. |
| Jon | One of them was like, you know, under a thousand. but Anyway, the point is, we’ve had to adjust this year. We’ve noticed that There’s a lot of inflation, a lot of tariffs hitting a lot of people, the price of a lot of gadgets. There aren’t that many truly interesting gadgets that we want to talk about under $25. |
| Jon | So what we decided to do, and we’ll tell you what the tiers are as we work our way through the show, but in this first… But in this first segment, all of these items we’re recommending, we each choose one item for each segment, are under $50. So you’re not going to spend more than $50 on these. and George, I want to start with you. What was your pick for the under $50 Geek Gift Guide category? |
| George | Yeah, i ah I was able to find something at close to our old tier at $29. John has been talking about these nonstop on the channel lately. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| George | It’s the Pixel Pocket Pro line from My Arcade, and I picked the Atari version just because it’s Atari, and you know if we’re going to pick a video game thing, we’re going to choose Atari most of the time. |
| Mo | ah |
| Jon | Oh, yeah. Cute. |
| Mo | Yeah, it’s cool. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| George | um I like these things because, you know, there’s something that, as the name says, you stick it in your pocket, you go play some games on the go. It’s easy. It’s quick. It’s fun. It’s playful. um I think the only thing that bothers me about it is that John has them and I don’t. |
| George | So I’m hoping that somebody out there… |
| Mo | Okay. |
| Jon | ah |
| George | will want to send me one for Christmas for some reason. Because believe it or not, as much love as we get from both my arcade and Atari, John tends to get most of the stuff. And Mo and I are usually kind of left held in the empty bag, so to speak. |
| George | ah |
| Jon | guys You guys need to make make a Christmas run over to my house and look around and see what things you need is what you need to do. |
| Mo | okay |
| George | You’re right. Yeah. |
| Jon | Come on over. Yeah. |
| George | Just walk in and take it. |
| Jon | Yep. |
| George | I’ll take this YouTube plaque. |
| Jon | Well, |
| George | I’ll take this. ah |
| Jon | but you make a really good point. |
| George | But no, it’s, |
| Jon | Sorry. Good. |
| George | they’re They’re really good, solid little devices, I think. And they’re designed to do what they do and they do it well. So why not give this as a stocking stuffer type of gift to the geek in your life? |
| Jon | hmm. |
| Jon | You know, and you make a really good point that I didn’t mention earlier, which is, for me at least, everything I’ve selected for this list is literally something I would love to own. |
| George | Hmm. |
| Jon | I really want it. It’s not just, I think it’s cool. I would like to own it If I don’t already, I would want to own it, right? |
| George | Yep. |
| Mo | Yeah, that’s true. |
| Jon | So I wonder, George, have you seen, knowing the Galaga freak that you are, hopefully you saw the video I did on the Galaga Pixel Pocket Pro. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | Not only does it have Galaga, not only does it have Galaxian, not only does it have the Galaga speed-up mode, it’s the original Midway ROM that has the no-fire glitch, and it saves high scores and persists them through battery changes. |
| George | Yep. |
| George | Yep. |
| George | Yep. |
| Mo | That’s awesome. |
| George | I mean, it feels like over the years as we’ve gotten closer and closer to the people at my arcade and they’ve listened to your reviews more and more, they’re starting to finally understand what’s important to us, their target audience and high scores, original ROMs. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Jon | Yeah. No kidding. |
| George | All of that is what we want. Like, we can all pick up the NES ROM, right? |
| Jon | Oh, yeah. |
| George | Nintendo license that shit out to anybody for any reason. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | You want to put it on a popcorn bucket here, here’s some, here’s your license, but getting the original ROMs is what’s really important to people like me. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| George | So yeah. Mo, what about you? you got anything for under $50? Okay. Okay. |
| Mo | Yeah, it’s a book. It goes for $35 right now on Amazon. I think you can get the Kindle version for like $17, $18. |
| George | okay |
| Mo | It’s called The Monsters Know What They’re Doing, Combat Tactics for Dungeon Masters. |
| Jon | Hmm. |
| Mo | So what this is, is that somebody took the monster manual from Dungeons & Dragons, went through pretty much all the monsters, and wrote up |
| George | Oh. |
| Jon | oh |
| Mo | just a huge section of each about how they would behave in situations. You know, you know, so it’s like, oh, if you get into a den of kobolds and dah, dah, you know, they will generally run when they get to a certain, you know, if they get beaten to a point, they’re going to start running and they’re going do this, and you know, and it gives you just all these like, cause the, the actual monster manual is very like technical, right? |
| George | Oh. |
| Jon | Right. |
| Mo | Stats. Here’s what they could do. Here’s what they, this one goes into behavior. |
| George | Ah, nice. |
| Mo | And it’s one, it’s just, it was just interesting just to read it. you know, it’s one of these ones you just open to a random page and start reading it. You’re like, Oh, that’s, I never thought about that. you know, I never thought like what, you know cause usually you see the dragons, you know, you get attacked by a bunch of whatever’s and then you kill them all. |
| Mo | Well, you know this race is basically cowards. |
| George | Right. |
| Mo | They will run at the first opportunity or they will sneak up on you and try to backstab you, know? |
| Jon | Hmm. |
| Mo | And that’s what the whole book is. There’s a whole series where he does different types things, but this one in particular I thought was really interesting. |
| Jon | That has never occurred to me before. and Like you said, the monster manual is pretty, so it’s it’s it’s robust, but it’s here are the abilities. |
| Mo | Yeah. Right. |
| Jon | Here’s how many hit points. Here’s how strong they are. Here’s what they like and don’t like. Here’s what they’re immune to or whatever. But they don’t talk about personality and behavior and psychology of these monsters. |
| Mo | right |
| Jon | Is this something that’s official in the TSR realm or no? |
| Mo | it’s it’s but It’s unofficially official, if that makes sense. |
| Jon | Yeah. Yeah. |
| Mo | like any like Pretty much everybody who’s serious into Dungeons & Dragons and runs lot games probably has a copy of this book. you know um |
| Jon | Really? Okay. Yeah. |
| Mo | But it’s one that, like said, it’s just for me, ah just opening it and reading it is just fun just for that. Because you’re like it’s like, oh, I never thought about like what would this dragon do here? |
| Jon | Because |
| Mo | or what would they do you know it was very interesting to look at it. |
| Jon | the reason I ask, is it official, is because… Really, if you play with different dungeon masters, they’re going to make up the behavior of these monsters on their own. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | This would provide some consistency from game to game. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Mo | Yes. |
| Jon | And if you look, you play with a guy Toledo and here’s how kobolds act. Well, if someone else, when you play with them in Denver, if they have the same book, you know how those monsters are going to behave now in a way you never did until you got to know the dungeon master. |
| Mo | Right. |
| Jon | That’s and That’s like a, it’s like a ah beam of light shining in a corner of the room I didn’t know was dark until now. |
| Mo | It’s. Yeah. |
| Mo | Yeah, you’re not kidding. |
| Jon | That’s interesting. |
| Mo | like i never yeah I never realized. |
| Jon | Wow. |
| Mo | i was like, wow, that really is sort of lacking from everything. They don’t talk about that. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | They just said you know’s say it’s very stat-oriented, very technical abilities, that kind of stuff. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | So again, it’s called The Monsters Know What They Are Doing, Combat Tactics for Dungeon Masters. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | That’s… Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | So again, Amazon, you can get the Kindle version for like $18. The hardcover is like $35. I say get the hardcover just because it’s cool to open, but it’s up to you. So that’s what I had. |
| Jon | Yeah. Interesting. |
| Mo | ah but |
| Jon | I like it. |
| Mo | Yeah. How about you, John? What do you got for us? |
| Jon | So this harkens back to every time I was with my dad, when I was a young lad, you know, 12, 11, 10, whatever that age, when we would go to a convenience store, dad’s getting gas, he’s going in to pay. |
| Jon | i would try to get a comic book and I would try to get one of those silly little balsa wood planes, that rubber band and a little propeller. |
| Mo | Oh yeah, with doorband thingies, right? |
| George | m Ooh. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | And I came across this thing. This is a smartphone paper airplane kit. So this is a kit that includes instructions and materials, by the way, like more rigid paper airplane, you know, like a card stock. |
| Jon | for folding and making a plane, but also in the kit. By the way, it costs $47. I guess I should point that out. |
| Mo | Okay. |
| Jon | So it’s under 50, just barely. Why does a paper airplane cost $47? |
| Mo | That’s good question. |
| Jon | It’s because once you make the plane, there are also electronics. There’s a little motor you put on the front. There’s little, ah what are they called on planes? Not rudders, the flaps or whatever that you can put on the back that are mechanical. |
| Mo | Okay. |
| George | Airlines and. |
| Jon | And all of that, yes, yeah, yeah. And all of that then connects to a phone app So you could throw the plane and fly it like an RC plane around the around the room, around the house, around the yard. |
| George | Ah. |
| Jon | And this one in particular is a paper airplane. And I put this one on the list. This is the sneakiest I’m going to be on this show, I promise. They’re actually, for a little more, for like $60-something, there’s a balsa wood version, like the one you remember. |
| George | ah |
| Jon | But this one is the paper airplane version of that. And the link that we’ll give Mo there, you know, you go to Amazon and say, here’s the one there, are two other options. |
| Mo | Yeah, you’ll you you’ll find the balsa wood one if they find the paper one. |
| Jon | You can look at the other ones if you want, but it’s just a throwback to, for me, i And those things never lasted. They were busted within a day or two, which just means the next time I went to the gas station, i wanted another one. |
| Jon | but And you wound them up with a propeller, sometimes with a rubber band, and you throw. Remember, they had little wheels. They would kind of land a little bit if you didn’t but they weren’t upside down. And having something like this that you can make it like you made the other ones. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | It’s little kit. But then you have this nerdy, geeky thing where you have a little motor with a little battery with a little app that you control. And now you have a powered steerable little toy plane like it used to pay 49 cents for in the corner store. |
| Jon | I just thought it was really cool. It’s again, like I said, something I would really like to play with. |
| Mo | Did you have, were they any, did you have seen any videos to say of like how they actually fly? Like, do they fly well? Are you able, they just kind of go. |
| Jon | I saw just the videos that were on the listing. I didn’t go like looking for Amazon or YouTube reviews of it or anything. |
| Mo | Okay. |
| Jon | I just saw the videos posted Amazon, which of course are them performing in their most obvious. But, you know, you make a good point. How good is it really? Is a 50 bucks going to be wasted? But… |
| Jon | I can still make the plane. It’s still going to fly at least as good as the crappy one I had did. It’s just, it costs a hundred times more. |
| Mo | Yeah, |
| Jon | It’s the only difference, you know? So maybe how well, how perfectly it flies. I mean, knowing the technology of drones and shit these days, I figured it’s probably got a little technology in it to know how to do the right thing. |
| Mo | it’s not as important, really. Yeah. |
| Jon | But even if it doesn’t, I think it’d to play with and try to make it work. So I wasn’t too hung up on the quality of the flight. |
| Mo | Okay. |
| Jon | So that was mine for 47 bucks. Okay. all right, gentlemen, when we get back, we’re gonna step it up to the next tier for a little bit better. What’d you say in the tease last week, George, you like them? |
| Jon | You’re really like them, or maybe you love them. We’re moving up to the kind of like people, right? |
| Mo | Ken like. |
| George | Yeah, we’re on the kind of like segment coming up. |
| Jon | You got to really like them then. Yeah. |
| Mo | We’re kind of likes. |
| Jon | All right. |
| George | yeah |
| Jon | We’ll be right back. |
| Mo | So now, if I remember correctly, we’re in the kind of like. category of presents, of gifts, right? |
| Jon | you you Got to kind of like him now. |
| George | Yep. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | so So, George, what would you give somebody you kind of like? |
| George | Well, um so I’m going to pull a George here and talk about two things in this segment. |
| Mo | ah |
| George | I don’t care if I’m breaking rules, even if they were my own at some point. But first up… |
| Mo | ah |
| Jon | um ah i go and polish I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I forgot. Mo, you said all the kind of like stuff, but you didn’t actually say the under $100. So we don’t know the criteria. |
| George | Okay. |
| Mo | Oh. |
| Jon | Yeah. Yeah. |
| Mo | but Okay, I’ll do it again. |
| Jon | You can you just add it in and we’ll add it or however have you wanna to do it However you want it. |
| Mo | Okay. |
| Jon | I just make sure we know, say what it is. Sorry. |
| Mo | So we’re now in the kind of like area, which is gifts under $100. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | e |
| Mo | Right? so So George, what would you give somebody you kind of like? Hmm. |
| George | a hard time um but besides that that is truthful yeah uh but i’m also gonna pull a george and break a rule and i’m going to talk about two things here in this segment so the first one a grumble all you want i’m gonna cheat anyway i don’t give a shit uh |
| Mo | Hmm. |
| Jon | ah ah but I’m going to go ahead and verify that’s accurate. |
| Jon | Oh, we know, but we’re going to grumble. |
| Mo | Yeah, yeah, but we’re still gonna grumble. |
| George | ah First one I’m going to talk about is something that probably could be on the David Letterman show that Mo was talking about in the last episode. It needs no introduction because it’s been one of the most popular Lego sets of the year. |
| Mo | susan |
| George | It is the Lego Super Mario Game Boy build. |
| Mo | Really? |
| Mo | Really? ah That’s popular. It’s awesome set. |
| Jon | Oh. |
| Mo | But yeah, that’s the most popular, huh? |
| George | it’s, it’s not only very, very popular. Like people are modding this thing to put real game boy components inside and be able to play. |
| Mo | Oh, geez. |
| George | I’ve talked about them on bit by bit multiple times. |
| Jon | Wow. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | That’s amazing. |
| George | Uh, and it’s $59. So as far as Lego sets go, it’s very affordable. |
| Jon | wow |
| Mo | Yes, actually. |
| George | And I know that we’re going to talk about other Lego sets here later on that might not quite be in the affordable category for some, but, um, |
| Jon | m |
| George | Whenever you get a chance to combine your love of retro gaming with Lego, you know we’re probably going to talk about it in Gen X Grown Up on some podcast at some point. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | Thank you. |
| George | It’s a solid set. The number on the Lego set is 72046. um Originally, if you bought it like right when they first came out, I think they were given some little extra gift away. I don’t think they’re doing that anymore, but… |
| George | The set is a quick, fun, easy build by every website’s review that I’ve been able to find. Again, it’s another thing that I don’t own, so I would love to own it. |
| Mo | Thank you. |
| George | And if anybody listening to this wants to get stupid and send me something for $59, I’d be happy to accept. Now, |
| Jon | ah |
| George | That being said, I said I have two things to talk about, and that’s because this other thing just hit my inbox the other day. |
| Jon | Oh, yeah. All right. |
| George | And while it’s still going on, I wanted to give a quick shout out to the Southern Fried Gaming Expo because they have their weekend pass on a Black Friday sale for $80. |
| Jon | Oh, that’s right. Yep. |
| George | Now… |
| Mo | Okay, that’s a good second one to have. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| George | you talk about wanting to give something to somebody kind of like, this is something I want to give to people I hate because SFGE is just one of the best gaming conventions that we’ve ever gone to. |
| Jon | ah |
| George | And whether you hate a person, love them or something in between, this is a place everybody should get in a chance to go. It’s, it’s just so much fun. We’ve worked with them for almost a decade now at this point. |
| George | And boy, I tell you, |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| George | hey to get a game pass or a weekend pass to go play free video games all weekend long, watch some pro wrestling, see some people eat some hot sauces, play board games for free till four o’clock in the morning and buy a whole bunch of stuff that you really don’t need, but still want to own anyway. |
| George | It’s one of the best out there. |
| Jon | It’s like giving an experience, right? |
| Mo | yeah |
| Jon | It’s it’s more than a gift is great, but an experience is something like, the hair here’s something you get to go and make ah make of it what you want and experience it. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | So yeah, cheating or not, I’m going to allow it. I approve. I think the double dip here is well, well warranted. |
| Mo | Yes. |
| George | There we go. All right. |
| Mo | You can double dip. Okay. |
| George | Well, since you approve, going to let you go next with your kind of like under $100 item for the fans. |
| Jon | Well, thank you. i appreciate that. |
| Jon | Yeah, yeah. So I didn’t know I wanted one of these until a friend was over visiting and he said, oh, I have this new thing in the car. going to bring it in. We can try it out. i’m like, I guess, whatever. So this is a mini portable projector. |
| Jon | Now, the one I’ve selected is only $79. |
| George | Hmm. Okay. |
| Mo | okay |
| Jon | I don’t necessarily need a portable projector because |
| Mo | No. |
| Jon | Look, I don’t have a great use for a projector because I have a television. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | I don’t have a blank wall to put a projection on. But… And also they’re typically very expensive. If they’re worth a damn, they’re several hundred dollars. |
| Mo | Yeah. Yeah, for sure. |
| Jon | So why would I spend that much money on something? Now, the reason he bought this when he was going on a trip and he said, well you know, I’m going I’m going to take it so that I can project my shows on the wall of the hotel and watch them rather than try to plug into the the hotel on the TV. |
| Jon | like That’s an interesting idea because you can make a hotel room pitch black with those blackout curtains. |
| Mo | Okay. |
| George | Right. |
| Mo | That’s true. |
| Jon | Sure. Okay. So we tried it. Now there are two varieties, a 59 and a 79. And so I went it up to 79 because this tier under $100. The difference in this one and the other one really is just ah higher ah lumens on the the projector lens. |
| Mo | and Okay. |
| George | Okay. |
| Mo | so Okay. |
| Jon | It’s brighter. bright It’s higher lumens. |
| George | Yep. |
| Jon | And also it has autofocus versus the other one has a little dial for manual focus. |
| Mo | Oh, okay. Hmm. |
| Jon | Well, let mes tell you what this thing can do. First of all, it’s a smart projector. Log into YouTube, log into Amazon, log, it whatever. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | It has apps that runs on it. So you don’t have to bring anything. You have to bring a fire stick if you don’t want to. You’d have to bring a computer to plug into it. It’s its own computer inside, a you know, a little like a smart TV would be projector. |
| Jon | Plus it has a USB plug so that you could get a um ah fire stick or something and plug it in power USB. And there’s an HDMI, full size HDMI plug on the back. |
| Mo | Okay. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | You go dig it in the menu. It has not just keystone correction, by which I mean geography of the parallelogram. Like you want it to be rectangular. When you shine on the wall, it’s going to be somewhat parallelogram, right? |
| Jon | And I didn’t expect this to work, but it said auto keystone. I’m like, i mean could you can try. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | And I clicked it and bam, it snapped to perfectly square on the crooked roof that I was pointing it at at the time. How does it, is it looking at a camera? Is it ah level in it on how it did it. |
| Mo | Magic. |
| Jon | Yeah, perhaps it’s magic. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | So for 80 bucks, basically a projector that works on its own can be a projector for another device, can have a little fire sticky kind of thing plugged in and could just run apps natively. I was so surprised that I’m like, well, damn, now I kind of want one of these. |
| Mo | Not sure what I’d do with it, but I want one. |
| Jon | Not exactly, but yeah, I would have fun with it. |
| George | Boy, I tell you, if you’re traveling and you pair that up with one of those cool little hundred and something dollar travel routers, you just have your whole entertainment system that you wouldn’t be beholden to anything else. |
| Jon | Right. |
| George | And boy, I tell you, I’m getting into more of that travel gear, even though I don’t get to travel anymore. |
| Jon | I know. |
| George | But man, there’s some cool stuff out there in that mini world for sure. |
| Jon | Right. |
| Jon | Yeah. I was stunned. I thought something this size got to be garbage. And like, it wasn’t top line projector, but it wasn’t garbage. It was pretty remarkable for what is. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| George | Hmm. |
| Jon | Things have come a long way since I last looked projectors. I’ll tell you what. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | All right. Mo, why don’t you round us out in the under $100 range? |
| Mo | Okay, so I kind of pushed the envelope here. So my thing is $95. |
| Jon | All right. |
| Mo | So it’s right at the edge. |
| Jon | Still legal. You’re good. |
| Mo | It’s right at the edge. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | It’s the Polaroid Go Generation 2 camera. It’s a Polaroid camera. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | money |
| Mo | The one that takes, you know, the instant pictures, you know. |
| Jon | Okay. |
| Mo | And the reason why I put this on here is that we were, ah me and Amy went on a trip to California to look at the Redwoods and stuff. And we met this random guy there. And he’s like, oh, we were talking with him. He’s like hey, you want me to take your picture? And he had one of these Polaroid cameras. |
| Mo | And he was able to take our picture and then hand it to us. |
| George | Nice. |
| Mo | You know, and I think there’s still something to be said for being able to hand something physical to somebody as opposed to digitally. |
| Jon | Right. |
| Mo | Oh, I’ll email it to you. I’ll send it to you, you know, text it to you. |
| Jon | I’ll text it to you, right? |
| George | Right. |
| Mo | Because as soon as we got home, that picture went right up on, you know, we stuck it on the refrigerator immediately. It’s, you know, it’s going to stay there probably forever. you know, i mean, it’s it’s like a physical thing that you could take and it’s instant. |
| Mo | Like it’s it’s instant gratification as well. um It ah its comes with a sixteen i think a film canister for $16. Of course, it’s Polaroid. The film’s not going to inexpensive when if you buy refills and stuff. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | I’m sure they’re not. I didn’t price them, but I know they’re not going cheap. But it just seems like such a cool thing to have. Like if you’re at a party, you take someone’s picture and you hand it to them. I don’t know. I think there’s something still be said for that. |
| Jon | Yeah, sure. Yeah. Something physical, something tactile. Yeah. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | um So what is the, so how does, do you know, how does this differ from just getting a vintage Polaroid? What does a Polaroid go? What is a generation two? What’s, what’s different? Is it super compact? Does it have a digital component or something or? |
| Mo | um It’s very small. This thing is tiny. I forget the dimensions. It’s like um it’s four by three, four inches by three inches. So it’s. |
| Jon | basically the size of the film canister. |
| Mo | it’s |
| Jon | Pretty much a little bitty. |
| Mo | Yeah, basically, like the film character probably barely fits in it, so it’s super tiny. |
| Jon | yeah |
| Jon | Right. |
| Mo | ah He said it’s the thing that makes it smaller. It is actually Polaroid. Polaroid makes this camera. So in that case, there are I did see some that were cheaper made by like basically who knows who these companies are kind of things. |
| Mo | they People seem to have a lot of issues with them, but this one, it seems like if you get the actual, yeah. |
| Jon | If you’re going to do it, just do it right. right |
| Mo | Yeah. if you’re going to get the Polaroid, they said this one is a good one to get. So it said it it was 95, but again, i think it’s it’s a kind of a novelty thing for sure. Not something you need, but again, we’re talking about gifts, right? It’s not something you should practically have. |
| Jon | Right. Yeah. |
| Mo | So yeah. |
| Jon | Something someone would appreciate might not buy themselves. Sure. |
| Mo | And so just imagine you give it someone for Christmas. You know, the first thing you to do is load with film and take pictures of people and hand them out. |
| Jon | at Christmas. |
| Mo | So, yeah you know, you get something back for it right away. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Jon | Yeah. Okay. Nice. Good pick. All right. So we’re about halfway through. We get back. We’re jumping up to the next. So what what was the tier list? We liked them. |
| Jon | We so kind of liked them. what What is this third tier, George? What would you classify that? |
| George | Sort of like them. |
| Jon | Sort of. We sort of like. We don’t love them yet. We’re going love them later. |
| George | Yep. |
| Jon | But right now we sort all right. That’s when we get back. Stick around. |
| George | Okay, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for the sort of liked tier, which is under $250. |
| Jon | to do? Okay. |
| George | Now, 20 years ago, that would have been the goddamn I’m in love and marrying this person tier. |
| Mo | see |
| George | But today it’s the sort of like. |
| Jon | Yeah. These, not so much. |
| George | Mo, why don’t you kick us off? do you have anything under $250 for somebody that you sort of like? |
| Mo | Yeah, um I found something actually is 119. So I went way below the limit. So it’s just just over the 100. |
| Jon | No way under nicely done. |
| George | Okay. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | But it is the Logitech MX Master 4 wireless mouse. yeah It’s a mouse. |
| Jon | Hmm. |
| George | Oh, yeah, I know that one. I looked at that one before. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | Oh, I, I don’t fill me in. |
| Mo | um So it’s it’s um obviously it’s a wireless mouse. Logitech. |
| Jon | Sure. |
| Mo | So what it has on it, though, one, it’s super accurate. So super sense. So you’re able to do like things very finely. It has haptic response. So as you’re moving over your page your window, if you get to an edge or a button, you’ll feel a little thing in the mouse. |
| Jon | Really? |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | So, you know, when you hit the edge of a window, you know, when you hit the button, you know, so it has feedback on it. |
| George | Yeah, haptics. |
| Mo | Plus, it has an app that you run that if you’re over, it knows what app you’re over and you have four hotkey buttons for that, just for that app. |
| George | e |
| Mo | That you could program for every app that you run. |
| Jon | Wow. got it. |
| Mo | It. Again, i don’t need it. |
| Jon | ah got it |
| Mo | But damn if it’s, you know. |
| George | Yeah, I kind of need it. |
| Jon | I got to go look at it now. What the? I can’t imagine. Like, it knows what you’re over. and like like Like a rumble feeling when you go off the air. |
| Mo | Yeah. and And you actually you’ll feel the little bump on your. |
| Jon | That’s crazy. |
| Mo | It’s it just seems cool. So again, for a mouse is super expensive. 120 bucks from a mouse is is pricey. You know, there’s no way about it. |
| Jon | But, you know, good mouse is like 50 bucks. |
| George | It’s not though anymore. |
| Mo | That’s true. |
| Jon | You know? ah Even a junkie mouse is 25. |
| George | Yeah. And programmable ones are a hundred dollars almost all day long now. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | Oh, really? |
| Jon | That’s right. |
| Mo | Okay. Okay, there you go So, you know, Logitech, super solid company. |
| Jon | That’s right. |
| Mo | They make super solid stuff. I’ve never had really many major issues with any Logitech stuff I ever owned. |
| Jon | No, no. Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | It’s USB-C charging. It also has Bluetooth, so you use Bluetooth connection as well. |
| George | Which is really good that Logitech’s finally doing Bluetooth. I hate that stupid Unify system they’ve had for so long. |
| Mo | Oh, yeah, they resisted that. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | Oh, it with that little dongle you had to have, and they everyone lost at some point. |
| George | e |
| Jon | I have a lot of those unified things, yeah. |
| Mo | Yep. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | um But yeah, so again, $120. But it’s just, I saw this one. and i was like, first i was like, yeah, mouse. They started reading about it. I’m like, this is damn cool. i I kind of want this. |
| George | yeah |
| Mo | And it also, like I said, it’s supposedly very, like no matter the surface, it’s super accurate, very sensitive. So you could… |
| Jon | That’s crazy. |
| Mo | you know, fine tune stuff. um So 120 bucks is, I think it’s a pretty cool thing. And when listening out there, they want to get me something for Christmas, you know, it’s, it’s, you know, this is what we want. |
| Jon | Yeah, right? No kidding. |
| George | This is less of a geek guy gift video or audio. |
| Jon | This just our wish list. |
| George | It’s more of a begging type of audio podcast. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | ah |
| Mo | So, so that’s what I had. So how about you, John? What’d you have for under two 50? |
| Jon | So I’ve changed. I would like the Logitech MX Master 4 mouse, which, is no I do want that, but I still have a pick. |
| Mo | ah |
| George | Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. |
| Jon | So, you know, I didn’t mention, coincidentally, we’ve been trying to go gradually increasing in price. That’s how we kind of sorted these. Yours was $119. So is hopping up a bit to $179. |
| Mo | OK. |
| Jon | And if you watch us on YouTube or you’ve listened to the podcast in the past, we’ve talked about this before. But just in case you haven’t, it’s worth recommending here. And it’s the Atari GameStation Go handheld game device. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | Now, we’ve been covering this ad infinitum on our YouTube channel. |
| Mo | It’s pretty cool. |
| Jon | There’s so much to explore with it. Here’s what you need to know. If you like the Nintendo Switch, but you’re really more of a retro game or Atari fan, this is the budget entry point that gives you a lot of specific controls you need for these classic games that you’re not gonna get anywhere else. So the GameStation Go is licensed by Atari to MyArcade, who’s the manufacturer. It’s preloaded with a little over 200 games. Now those consist of Atari console games, like 2600 and 7800, few games. |
| Jon | lots of vintage arcade games, some that maybe you never see in arcades, like that old football game with the giant trackball you would spin, you know, and the super bug with the steering wheel, things like that. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. |
| George | Atari football. |
| Mo | so yeah |
| Jon | ah Plus some Pico and Jaleco, plus some pinball machines, plus some recharge games have been migrated to this little handheld. So it’s not just retro. But the thing that makes it stand out and probably the thing that’s probably getting the most press about the GameStation Go is the variety of controls. |
| Jon | Yeah, you’ve got a D-pad, you’ve got, you know, buttons and shoulder bumpers and everything, but for 5200 games, you have numpad so you can type in the numbers on that keypad, right? |
| George | Thank |
| Mo | Nice. |
| Jon | You have a track ball down in the corner so you can play centipede properly. You have a fully rotational spinner dial in the upper left so you can play Tempest correctly, Indy 500 correctly, Major Habit correctly. |
| Jon | You can actually play these games the way you’re supposed to play them |
| Mo | And Pong. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | ah Now, I have to admit there are some compromises here, right? That spinner is not a great big weighted spinner. It’s a small spinner on a handheld. The trackball is not a big bowling ball rolling around. It’s a tiny little thumb trackball, little more sensitive, takes some getting used to. |
| Jon | But all very functional, and they’ve added this technology. With all these games, what used to happen is you started a game and started mashing buttons until something worked. They added something called Smart Glow. So each game when you launch it, |
| Jon | If that game needs the D-pad and the A button, the B button, those illuminate. Those light up. So you know exactly. If someone isn’t familiar with these games, there’s brief instructions. |
| Jon | It illuminates the controls you need. And you can play. And on top of that, not advertised, not supported. Yeah. You can add your own ROMs on an SD card, pop it in the top, and play tons of Nintendo games, Sega games. |
| Jon | Yeah. I was able to put my entire Atari Lynx library on there. Atari didn’t let them put Lynx on there. You could put Lynx on there and play those games. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | It’s it’s a on its own shipping. It’s fun. But the more you are a techie, nerdy kind of tinkerer, you’re going to have even more fun with this thing. They also have some peripheral controls and arcade stick. |
| Jon | That would blow my budget out for the under $250 if I tried to add those. But |
| Mo | she |
| Jon | The Game Station Go, $179. I’ve seen some sales happen for Black Friday. If you have an Atari nerd in your life and they haven’t asked you for one of these, they probably want one. So check it out. Don’t get us one. We all have one already because we’ve been working on it. So this is the one thing we’re not begging for, but I’m begging you to check it out for your friends on your list because it’s really a remarkable handheld, especially under $200. Yeah, so that was my pick. All right, George, how about you? a little more expensive. Moving on up. |
| George | Yeah, well, I mean, in this category, because I just got the email last week and went ahead and bought them anyway, I was going to put Weird Al concert tickets on this list, but ah I went ahead and just bought those for myself, so there’s no point. |
| Jon | oh wow ha |
| George | um I found something. Well, I didn’t find something. We’ve talked about it a lot. It’s $199 for the particular bundle that I’m talking about, but this is the game ultimate bundle for their light gun plug and play system that houses time crisis, um, |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | That’s right. |
| George | point blank and what’s the other one that’s in there i forget even it’s just ridiculously steel gunner yeah one and two in there it is a blast to play john has done a video that’s doing really well for us as a review already and i’m still waiting for mine to get in i know one’s on the way but boy if you were a fan of arcade games back in the day |
| Mo | gunner. |
| Jon | Steel Gunner 1 and 2. Yeah. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| George | I don’t think you can go wrong with this thing. I mean, it has the pedal. |
| Mo | she |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. |
| George | The ultimate bundle comes with two guns. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| George | It is plug and play. So you literally just plug in a power cord and the HDMI into your television, follow the directions on screen and you’re up and playing. It’s not like one of these sending light gun systems that you have to go through crazy amounts of configuration to get to work or something that plugs into a console, but isn’t the original ROM or feels weird. |
| Mo | Oh, yeah. |
| George | It’s, or doesn’t have the right accuracy, this thing, it’s it’s built damn near perfect for what it does. |
| Jon | you know On the video you talked about, since it got so many views, we got lots and lots of comments. And always what you get is just people that want to hate. It’s weird how people will come into a YouTube video and go, I don’t like this because it’s too expensive. I don’t like this. get Right. So and you know as several people go, $199 is too expensive for what this is. I can play this on my PlayStation. |
| Jon | and And I’ll respond. I’m like, wonderful. So how much does this PlayStation cost? |
| George | Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | How much does it cost to get a ah copy of these four games if they were in fact all ported, which I think two of them were ported to the place. so Let’s so stick there. And then you a CRT because PlayStation requires a CRT in order to read those light guns. Then you have to buy the light gun controllers. |
| Jon | You are quickly getting up into the four or $500 range just to play this game on a PlayStation on a TV you didn’t have that you don’t want to put in the corner of the room. |
| Mo | Oh, easily. right. |
| Jon | The whole point that I find remarkable here, not only the things you said that it works is like, there’s no sensors like we sensors to mount around your TV. |
| George | right yeah yeah |
| Mo | ah right |
| Jon | This can work on a 15 inch up to 150 inch TV or HD projectors even because it has ah a HD camera mode in the, the, in the barrel of the gun that’s looking at the TV. |
| Jon | So it knows where you’re pointing based on where it’s at on the TV. |
| Mo | That’s how it does it. |
| George | yeah it’s that along with some software and ai stuff it’s it’s all proprietary but it’s cool as hell |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Some predictive stuff. it’s It’s staggering how easy it is, which is, I think their claim to fame is, this is a premium product. |
| Jon | I know it’s $200. How much work do you want to put in to playing these games? |
| George | Yeah. |
| Jon | You can invest four or five and maybe play it on PlayStation, but you still don’t have this. |
| George | Like, |
| George | I can go build my own car for a few thousand dollars, maybe, but I’d rather just go buy one for 20 and be done with it. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | You know, it’s granted. |
| Jon | Right. Mm-hmm. |
| George | Yeah. Is it overpriced for what it delivers? I don’t think so. I know a lot of people are talking about that stuff in the comments, but I really don’t think so because what it delivers is convenience. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | You got to run the numbers. |
| Mo | yeah |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | Like people are like, oh, it only delivers four games. |
| Jon | Run the numbers. |
| George | It’s not about the games that it delivers. It’s convenience. it It’s proving out a new system. And by the way, this company definitely has plans for stuff to come into the future that I know about that I can’t talk about right now. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | ah |
| George | But I’m telling you, if it wasn’t for this system right and now, having done so well on Kickstarter and our YouTube videos and whatnot, they wouldn’t be able to do anything else. |
| Jon | Welcome to my life. Yeah. |
| George | So they needed the first thing. They got the licensing from Bandai Namco, which by the way, Bandai Namco are very protective of their products. |
| Mo | Oh, yeah, very much so. |
| George | They wanted to put Time Crisis 2 on this system. They wouldn’t let them. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | It’s that simple. They wanted to give you more things to put on here. |
| Jon | They’re tough to work with. They can be. |
| George | They just weren’t allowed to, but trust me, there’s more to come in the future. And that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it right now today for $200. |
| Jon | No kidding. |
| Mo | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | Yeah. Yeah. It’s great. All right. I think we’re there. We’re almost to the gifts for somebody you actually love. I think we’re up there. So in and in this next one, we’re bumping even higher. |
| Mo | Yep. |
| Jon | Is there a limit? I think we put a limit on it ourselves, but we didn’t restrict ourselves. So we get back. Let’s see how high we went for gifts for somebody you really love. Stick around. |
| Jon | George, you teed it up, man. You said, kind of liked you, sort of liked you. like And then now you got to love somebody to want to put some money out. And we have tiered these. They’re going more and more expensive. So you’re going to be first. So yours is actually the lowest price point of anything in this collection. |
| Jon | So I want you to get us started. |
| George | Yeah, so under over $250, like you said, um I really wanted to put some other items in this spot. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. Yep. |
| George | And it’s not because the item that I put in the spot is a bad item or anything like that. It’s just that the items I wanted to put in this spot are not available for purchase at the time we’re recording this episode. |
| Mo | Okay. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | is Fair enough. |
| George | I really, if I had my pick, I would put the Alice goes to wonderland wonderland amusements 75 arcade pinball machine in this list at a thousand I think it’s like twelve hundred dollars that’s what it’s retailing I got it for 800 on the kickstarter I found out recently by the way I was the number 10 person to sign up in that thing and it was fully funded in two minutes that’s how quick I was on that thing yeah |
| Jon | Wow. |
| Mo | Really? Wow. |
| Mo | Yeah. ah |
| George | But still, because I couldn’t put that, and I’m not going to put like a full-size Stern pinball machine on there for like six grand minimum, because that’s just, you know, that’s not I love somebody. |
| Jon | yeah |
| George | That’s that’s my clone I’m buying a gift for. That’s crazy pricing. |
| Jon | I gotta like you like I like me. |
| George | Yeah. ah So I decided to pare it back down a little bit, and I went for $279, the Evercade Alpha Street Fighter Barcade unit. |
| Jon | yeah |
| Mo | Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. |
| George | I like these units for a lot of reasons. Number one, they’re the barcade style that I’ve got a couple of here at the house from the old arcade one up systems like, you know, that had like seven or eight games on them. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | yeah |
| George | I’ve got a couple of Galaga units and whatnot. But what I really like about these Evercade Alpha units is that not only do they come all pre-assembled and everything’s ready, |
| George | but they’ve got those cartridge slots. So it means it’s infinitely expandable with any cartridge that Evercade produces. |
| Jon | Bright. |
| George | So if you’ve got the Activision collection number one, or you’ve got the Neo Geo collection number two cartridge, you now are adding 15, 20, 10, 30 more games to your system just by plugging in a cartridge. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | Yeah. True. |
| George | That’s so goddamn cool. That’s such a brilliant system to put out there because people can get in for under $300 and then $30 at a time as a birthday rolls around or a special holiday or an anniversary, you can expand it and they’re still going to love it. |
| Jon | Expand it. Yeah. |
| George | You’re going to give new life to something that’s been sitting on that table for a little while. Maybe they didn’t play it for the last few weeks. You get them a new cartridge. Now they’re back into it for another month. |
| Jon | All new. Ready to roll again. Yeah, it’s a great system. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| George | I mean, |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | It is awesome. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| George | They’ve put together a really nice system. Evercade, they do some great work over there. Their systems are solid as a rock. i I don’t think I’ve heard of anybody complaining about anything breaking down or falling apart or anything. |
| George | John, I think you maybe got one of these alphas or something at some point for a review. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | I just got the new ah Bubble Bobble model in. |
| George | Right. |
| Jon | Yeah, we have not had a chance to cover it yet. It’s sitting on my to-do shelf right now. Yeah, and it’s a beast. |
| George | Hmm. |
| Jon | And like you described, it’s the same idea. It has the games. low i think it’s Data East games, but you can throw cartridges in and keep adding, keep adding. |
| George | Yeah, i think I think that’s awesome. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | I think it’s beautiful. $279 and it’s pretty much infinitely expandable. I don’t know how many cartridges they have out, but if you go to their website and scroll that little wheel, it like it feels like it never stops scrolling with all the box art that they have of the spines of the cartridges. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | ah |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | And each cartridge has like, like I said, 8, 10, 20 games on it. It’s just, it’s a great system. |
| Mo | Wow. could do links. |
| George | So 279 Evercade Alpha. I chose the Street Fighter Barcade Edition, but like John said, there’s Bubble Bobble and there’s a few others out there. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | And they’re on Amazon, which we’ll have links in the show notes for all these items, I’m sure, because Mo’s a workhorse and he gets all that stuff done for us. |
| Jon | ah |
| George | But there you go. |
| Mo | do links |
| George | John, are you going to tee us up with what I think is the first of two crazy building toys? |
| Jon | yeah |
| Jon | Yeah, I am. Yeah, I am. |
| George | All right. |
| Jon | And you know, this costs $400, $399 and change for Lego, right? |
| George | wo |
| Jon | And it’s really, said at the beginning, these are things I would love to have. I really don’t want anybody to spend this much money on me for something this silly. |
| Mo | yeah |
| Jon | But man, I love that it exists for someone who can afford it, who is a fan. the Lego USS enterprise NCC 1701 D icons set. |
| Mo | What? They actually got the license for those? |
| Jon | This is set. What are three, five, six. |
| Mo | I thought they were fighting. |
| George | Yes. |
| Jon | Yes. This is the first star Trek license they’ve ever had. |
| George | It was Creo for a long time. |
| Mo | Yeah. Oh, yeah, because they’ve been screaming for this forever. People wanting this. |
| Jon | I know, right? So they’re all up in Star Wars’ business, but never had a Star Trek license. |
| Mo | Yeah, yeah. |
| George | Yep. |
| Jon | Now, will there be more beyond Icons? We don’t know for sure. We’ve got hope, right? But right now, we have this, because Icons line is kind of specialty, right? We’ve got the the Atari 2600 as part of the Icons line. |
| Jon | We didn’t get more Atari stuff, but we could have. It’s going be the popularity of this thing. |
| George | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | It is, it’s, it’s, it’s gorgeous. This thing. It, it, I’ve seen people put it together. It has all the minifigures of the main cast. Each one has a prop. |
| Jon | It’s, I didn’t even look at how many pieces it is. I think it’s about, let me see, I had to go look and see because I did look it up. Oh, sorry. |
| George | Good luck. |
| Jon | Due to high demand, we can’t take it to the Lego site. |
| George | Yeah. |
| Mo | You can’t go to the website right now. |
| George | That’s what I, that was my comment that I was going to make. |
| Jon | You can’t look. Oh, yeah. Was it? |
| George | Yeah. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | I was going to make that comment. |
| Jon | So you went to look too? |
| Mo | Yeah, I did too. |
| George | I did. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | I went to look cause you have the link and I went to look and it’s like, Oh, sorry. |
| Mo | ah You can’t. |
| George | Oh, I just got in. |
| Mo | Sorry. You did? |
| George | i just got in. |
| Jon | Did you? Oh, good. |
| Mo | Nope, I didn’t. |
| Jon | What’s it say? |
| George | I don’t know. I got to hit continue, accept all Jesus Christ. |
| Jon | Well, so while you’re looking, let me tell you this. |
| George | Uh, |
| Jon | If you buy this thing now, remember that you you mentioned before, George, the Game Boy had a special bonus set you would get. If you buy this now when it launches, there’s an extra set you get. |
| George | right. |
| Mo | Oh, of what? |
| Jon | It’s a little shuttlecraft and an extra action figure of Ensign Roe Laren. |
| Mo | Oh. |
| Mo | Of. |
| George | Oh wow. Wow. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | Okay. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | You kind of have to buy that considering that’s your wife’s nickname, but… |
| Jon | You can only get |
| Mo | Yeah, no, I thought, John, don’t you have to get this? |
| Jon | Let me tell you, situations being different, money being up what with his it is, would already be ordered. I’ll tell you, it’s crazy. It’s crazy. But this thing is gorgeous. |
| George | So it’s 3,600 pieces. |
| Jon | Yeah, yeah. |
| Mo | Wow, that’s a good size set. |
| Jon | And they’re able to match those. You know, the Enterprise D has these amazing contours. |
| Mo | Oh, holy cow. Sorry, it just popped up on my screen. |
| Jon | and |
| Mo | Hold up. |
| Jon | Did you see? |
| Mo | Holy crap. |
| Jon | Yeah, yeah. It has these contours and these shapes and the kind of bulbous areas and the curves. And they do such a good job to mimic that in what really is a pretty… pretty jagged sort of building system. It’s, it’s just crazy. It looks like such an amazing build to do. And I would recommend it to anybody who is even remotely a Star Trek fan at 400 bucks. Yeah. |
| Jon | Wow. |
| George | Now, I got to admit, I have some of the Creo sets, the really big Star Trek ships that they did, and a couple of their little mini ones that they came out with, too, the little Klingon and everything. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| George | But for Lego to get this IP finally, after all these years… |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| George | Yeah, I’m probably going to be broke. ah Just to let anybody know, John, so this thing, it says it’s releasing on November the 28th, which is just a couple of days after this podcast drops. |
| Jon | ah |
| Mo | So a week from now. Yeah. |
| George | So you’ll have an opportunity to click the link and hopefully you won’t have to wait too long to get in like Mo and I did. |
| Jon | That’s right. |
| Mo | Oh, you can’t even buy it right now, huh? |
| George | But no, you you can’t buy it right now. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. Yeah. |
| George | You got to wait till the 28th, 12 a.m. |
| Mo | Oh, my God. |
| George | Eastern time on the pieces can be yours for four hundred dollars |
| Mo | ah You know, this is going to worth something. |
| Jon | m |
| Mo | This is definitely one that said this. |
| Jon | But who’s going to buy only scalpers that have a deep pockets? Because anybody that buys this by God wants it. Like if I bought it going it wasn’t wouldn’t go on for sale. |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| George | didn’t you buy two of a pac-man arcade thing before and two of the 2600 yeah |
| Jon | Yeah, but I was, I was, I was wealthier back then. |
| Mo | yeah |
| Jon | So yeah. |
| Mo | Oh my God. The mini. Okay. I want this just for the wharf. ah |
| George | yeah the minifigs are awesome |
| Jon | Isn’t it? They’re crazy. They’re so cute. They’re so cute. Mo, why don’t you round us out? |
| Mo | Yeah. |
| Jon | What do you have in this over 250, gotta really love somebody, geek gift guide tier? |
| Mo | So this is another Lego set and I, okay. this is also like John in no way, shape or form would I want somebody to actually get this for me because I don’t have the time or space. |
| Mo | For it, quite honestly. But it’s the Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon for a mere $843. |
| Jon | But… |
| Mo | The |
| Jon | That big box. That big cube. I’ve seen it. Yeah. |
| Mo | the model itself when you’re done is like almost two feet by three feet when you’re finished. um It is… It’s 7,500 pieces, little 7,500 It comes with the minis, like Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C-3PO. |
| Mo | Plus, it also has a separate set with old Han Solo with Rey and Finn. So you can do both sets of movies. |
| Jon | Really? |
| George | Oh, nice. |
| Mo | Yeah, they they give you both sets. |
| Jon | ah that’s a good idea. |
| Mo | It has a that… |
| George | Did it have Obi-Wan, did you say? |
| Mo | No, it had ah Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia. |
| George | So no Luke, no Obi-Wan? |
| Mo | Nope, none of those. |
| Jon | o |
| George | Wow, that’s a kind of a miss at $800. |
| Mo | we get tons But you get tons of Lukes, though. You buy an X when you get Luke. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | I mean, Luke’s easy to get. |
| Jon | he He hasn’t picked them up yet. He he hasn’t met them yet. It’s early in the show. |
| George | ah But he’s got Leia. |
| Mo | But just a… |
| George | How does he have Leia on the ship without Luke and Obi-Wan? |
| Mo | Well… |
| Jon | Oh. He kicked them out so they could have some privacy. |
| Mo | They realized he was a brother and had to get rid of him. um But it has the even has that little combat remote helmet that he wore. It has the the holographic game the holographic game that they played. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Mo | It has like escape. I mean, it’s seeing I watch the videos of this thing is crazy. Obviously, I’ll put a link to it. But again, not something I would ever want because I don’t have space for the Lego sets I already own. |
| Mo | But if somebody is a serious Star Wars fan, a serious Lego fan, and you want them to be devoted to you for the rest of your life, this is the kind of thing that would help do that. |
| George | hoof |
| Jon | that love. the here here’s You don’t love them. You’re trying to get their love if you buy this one. |
| Mo | Yeah, you’re buying their love here. |
| Jon | That’s what you’re doing. |
| George | oh |
| Jon | You want to be beloved. |
| Mo | ah ah Yeah, at this point. |
| George | ah d I think you own their love at that point. |
| Jon | o |
| Mo | But yeah, but it is this is not a new set. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | It’s been out for a while. um It’s funny. It’s like, oh, you could actually get paid over time. could pay over installment payment. |
| George | ah |
| Jon | Installments. |
| George | Lego layaway, ladies and gentlemen, brought to you by Gen X Grown Up. |
| Mo | Lego Layaway. |
| George | ah |
| Mo | But yeah, it’s it’s it’s a gorgeous set. |
| Jon | Yeah. it’s It’s crazy cool. |
| Mo | But I’ll tell you one thing, though. |
| Jon | yeah |
| Mo | If I had a choice, though, I would rather have the Enterprise. |
| Jon | Really? |
| Mo | Quite honestly, the Enterprise just looks… |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | One, it’s the first time they’re doing Star Trek. |
| Jon | Yeah. |
| Mo | You know, that’s going to special set. |
| Jon | Mm-hmm. |
| Jon | I agree. Yeah. Yep. It’s hard to not try to find that money. And I’m like, I’m irresponsible to do it. |
| Mo | Ah. |
| Jon | It’s so cool. But, and this Falcon too, is just like, like that thing makes a statement. |
| George | It feels like maybe you should eat a whole lot of hot sauce on a live stream to buy that Lego ship. |
| Jon | I’m trying to fund the Lego enterprise. |
| Mo | ah have have a benefit |
| George | Yep. |
| Jon | There we go. I can’t sit down for a month, but I got a Lego enterprise. |
| George | yeah |
| Mo | ah John’s like worth it yeah yeah amazing |
| Jon | Totally worth it. |
| George | yep |
| Jon | I have to stand to build it, but that’s all right. |
| Jon | Oh, I think we did it again, guys. We made it through another year, another geek gift guide. |
| Mo | yeah |
| Jon | A lot of Lego on here. We three or four Lego sets on here. Not surprising. They do some great stuff this year. So makes sense. |
| Mo | yeah |

| Jon | We certainly appreciate it. but Look, Mo’s going through all the trouble to put him in the show notes. Go click for heaven’s sake. Make the guy feel good. |
| Mo | Yeah, yeah. |
| Jon | but |
| George | he |
| Jon | Before we let you go, though, want to quickly thank a new Patreon supporter who headed over to GenXgrownup.com slash Patreon, opened up his heart, opened up his wallet, set up a regular recurring pledge to support what we do financially. Guy Schlosser. |
| Jon | Signed up, added his name to the roster, said, yeah, you guys do great work. I love what you do. You give it to me for free, but I want to ensure that you can keep doing it. That’s what that statement is. |
