The Atari VCS entered 1982 as the undisputed king of home video games. Millions of consoles had found their way into living rooms, arcade games were becoming cultural phenomena, and Atari was firing on all cylinders. The result was one of the most ambitious years in the system’s history.
In 1982, Atari released sixteen new cartridges for the VCS, including arcade adaptations like Berzerk, Defender, and Vanguard, groundbreaking originals such as Yars’ Revenge and Haunted House, ambitious adventures like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Raiders, and even the infamous E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
But which of these games still hold up? Which were the best examples of Atari operating at the peak of its creativity? And which ambitious ideas failed to live up to their potential?
In this video, I’ll be ranking every game Atari released for the VCS in 1982 through the eyes of Little Jonny—the thirteen-year-old Atari fanatic who was there to experience many of them firsthand.
