Atari’s classic 800XL home computer is making a comeback! Newly announced by Atari, THE 800XL from Retro Games Ltd. brings a full-sized mechanical keyboard, a working cartridge slot, and built-in Atari BASIC together with HDMI and modern gaming conveniences. In this announcement editorial, I take a look at what’s been revealed, what stands out, and why bringing back the computer experience makes this more interesting than just another box of retro games. THE 800XL includes 25 built-in games, USB loading for cartridge, disk, and cassette images, and announced software support for Atari’s 400, 800, XL, and XE computers, plus Atari 5200 games. Four save slots per game and up to 30 seconds of rewind bring some modern help to those vintage challenges. U.S. preorders opened October 8, 2026, at $219.99, with shipping scheduled to begin April 23, 2027. The package includes a THECXSTICK joystick. Did you grow up with an Atari computer? And would you use this for games, BASIC programming, or dusting off your old cartridges? Let me know in the comments! Dimitris “Modern Vintage Gamer” Giannakis is leaving Limited Run Games and joining Atari-owned Digital Eclipse—a big get for preservation-minded retro fans. MVG co-built LRG’s Carbon Engine; now he’s headed to Digital Eclipse (of Atari 50 and the Gold Master Series fame). What does this mean for future collections and restorations? Let’s break it down. We also cover a retail shake-up: Costco has removed Xbox listings in the US and UK and, per a rep, doesn’t plan to carry Series X|S “going forward,” calling it a business decision. This lands right before Microsoft’s October 3 price hike (Series X to $649.99, Series S to $399.99). We unpack what this means for Xbox visibility going into holiday 2025. Finally, Eden, the Nintendo Switch emulator that hit Google Play two weeks ago, was pulled from the store. Reporting points to a wave of Nintendo DMCA notices; the devs say they’ll appeal while development continues off-store. We look at what happened and what it signals for emulation on Android. ? Drop your takes: • Will MVG at Atari’s Digital Eclipse raise the bar for classic comps? • Does Costco’s move signal deeper retail headwinds for Xbox? • Is the Play Store a viable home for emulators after Eden’s removal?
