Is Atari Bringing Back The 800XL? + More Retro News!

Atari may be hinting at a return for one of its classic 8-bit computers, and that has us wondering what kind of retro hardware revival could be coming next. ?? This week on Bit By Bit, we’re digging into the new Atari 800XL trademark buzz, the surprisingly interesting return of Bubsy in Bubsy 4D, Embracer spinning off Fellowship Entertainment, AYANEO’s new Pocket Air Mini Arcade Home Edition, R-Type Dimensions III, Nintendo 64 rollback netcode, Lenovo’s ROM-loaded retro handheld controversy, and a fan-made Final Fantasy XVI SNES-style demake. It’s another packed week of retro gaming news, weird hardware, classic franchises, and a few stories that made us say, “Wait… what year is it again?” #RetroGaming #Atari #BitByBit #Atari800XL #RetroNews #Nintendo64 #Bubsy4D #AYANEO #FinalFantasy #GenXGrownUp - LINKS New Atari Hardware - https://tinyurl.com/4ty4mntv Bubsy 4D Review - https://tinyurl.com/3yv6tnah Embracer split - https://tinyurl.com/yc84dena AYANEO New Pocket Air Mini - https://tinyurl.com/4982s5h2 R-Type Dimensions III - https://tinyurl.com/y3tfecmd NSO N64 Updates - https://tinyurl.com/u38ervms Lenovo G02 Problems - https://tinyurl.com/mubt35c2 Final Fantasy XVI SNES demake - https://tinyurl.com/y6e6zwj8 - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com - CHAPTERS 0:30 - New Atari Hardware 3:18 - Bubsy 4D Review 6:24 - Embracer split 9:25 - AYANEO New Pocket Air Mini 12:31 - R-Type Dimensions III 15:07 - NSO N64 Updates 17:08 - Lenovo G02 Problems 19:13 - Final Fantasy XVI SNES Demake

COMIX ZONE Isn’t the Beat-‘Em-Up You Think It Is

Released in 1995 near the end of the Sega Genesis era, Comix Zone remains one of the most visually distinctive games ever created. Instead of fighting your way across traditional levels, you battle through the pages of a living comic book as Sketch Turner, an artist trapped inside his own creation by the villain Mortus. But Comix Zone's reputation isn't built on presentation alone. Beneath the incredible artwork, comic panels, and speech bubbles lies a surprisingly demanding game that rewards planning, memorization, and mastery as much as quick reflexes. In this episode of Friday Plays, I'm stepping into the pages of this Genesis classic to find out what has kept Sega fans talking about it for more than thirty years. #retrogaming #segagenesis #sega #genxgrownup - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com

Atari 2600 ASTEROIDS Is Harder Than You Remember

Try Afterplay FREE: https://genxgrownup.com/afterplay Atari 2600 Asteroids is often remembered as an incredibly easy version of the arcade classic—but are most players judging the game by its easiest settings? In this Friday Plays, I move beyond the slow, forgiving default variation and play Game variation 4 on expert difficulty, with faster asteroids, hostile UFOs, hyperspace, and an extra ship every 10,000 points. It may not be an accurate recreation of the original vector arcade game, but it remains an effective and highly playable adaptation. The question is whether turning up the challenge changes its reputation. #atari #retrogaming #arcade #genxgrownup - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Fightbox » https://genxgrownup.com/fightbox King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com

Ramp-up time was a few months which included creating a custom 2600 screen editor Game design goals: Create a unique, modern-feeling game that blends game elements I loved from 80s games to create a varied experience (graphic adventures, platforming/exploration, puzzle games) Must have a basic story to make it more engaging. Text display was added right from the beginning Game should take at least 4 hours to complete and more to find all optional objectives for replay incentive There must be a payoff for completing the game: added end screen with ranking Try to avoid unrealistic object graphics and sounds as much as possible on 2600. For example: Bats and spiders should not be half the height of your character height Jumping should make a sound when you land, not when you jump up Keep it authentic: no hardware enhancements (e.g. ARM in cart) Game development details 100% written in assembler in VS Code + Atari Dev Studio ROM size is 128KB in Superbank format. This format is a regular bankswitch format without any hardware enhancements. RAM size is regular 128 bytes (includes the stack) and basically about same as to first original cartridges for 2600 except with a lot more ROM To push the Atari 2600 graphics to the limit, I created a custom screen editor that can calculate automatically the instructions for a given graphics block (kernel) and it checks whether it fits in a scanline Created a sound pattern step sequencer tool for the intro and end screen music I coded the game and designed the puzzles, graphics I did together with my wife Sandra Hanssen. She also created the box design and stickers Development time was about 10 months for the game development excluding about 4 months in ramp-up and creating tools #indiegame #atari #retrogaming #genxgrownup - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com

ATARI 2600 POLARIS Added Something the Arcade Never Had

Polaris began as a Taito arcade game in 1980, but when Tigervision brought it to the Atari 2600, programmer Robert H. O’Neil did more than simply scale down the original. He added an entirely new phase that arcade players never experienced. Independently suggested by both @theblockydad and @BeastCake1349, this week’s Friday Plays dives into this uncommon 1983 release, compares it with the arcade original, and asks whether what Polaris ADDED can compensate for what was lost in translation. #atari #retrogaming #vintage #genxgrownup - SHOP http://genxgrownup.com/amazon http://GenXGrownUp.com/merch - PODCAST http://GenXGrownUp.com/pod - SUPPORT US https://patreon.com/genxgrownup - WEB & SOCIAL http://GenXGrownUp.com/discord https://twitch.tv/genxgrownup http://fb.me/GenXGrownUp https://bsky.app/profile/genxgrownup.com https://www.tiktok.com/@genxgrownup https://www.instagram.com/genxgrownup/ http://GenXGrownUp.com - SPONSORS Order of Cosmic Champions » http://www.orderofcosmicchampions.com King of Nerds » http://kingofnerds.tv
