The game involves a series of ten arithmetic problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. The player can edit different gameplay modes to alter how the numbers in the problem are chosen, or if their questions are timed. The game was released in 1977 as one of the earliest releases for the console. The game is the only known game developed for the VCS by Palmer, who initially worked at Atari creating debugging stations for game developers, and later assisted with work on the Atari 400/800 line of computers. It was the first educational video game for the VCS, with others companies also releasing arithmetic-themed cartridges in the same year for the Fairchild Channel F and RCA Studio II. The game was also released under the title Fun with Numbers and Math. Reportedly, fewer than 1000 of the cabinets were ever manufactured and released to arcades - and that's a shame, because it has quite a pedigree. Not only was it developed by Dave Theurer (who worked on classics like Missile Command and Tempest), but is also notable as being the first commercially produced arcade game rendered entirely with real-time, flat-shaded, 3D polygonal graphics. At the time, I Robot received negative reviews and was a financial flop for Atari, but in the intervening years, it has been recognized as the landmark title that it is - and was even included in the Atari 50 collection in 2022. Atari released Tod Fry's VCS conversion of Pac-Man in 1981 to somewhat mixed reviews. Like the Star Wars prequels, Pac-Man has become more appreciated as the years pass, but at the time it left many players frustrated and wanting more. So, the following year, when the home version of Ms. Pac-Man was set to be released, Atari seemed to be doing everything it could to put Mister in the past. Jon was among those disappointed with Pac-Man on the 2600, and he's also among those who have grown more fond of it over the years. But in 1982, the wound was still fresh. And it's clear Atari wanted players to know they were listening.
