They Actually STUDIED ATARI’S CENTIPEDE to Make This Board Game

Turning Atari’s Centipede into a board game sounds like a questionable idea—but Milton Bradley did far more than paste familiar artwork onto an unrelated children’s game.

In this video, I set up and play the officially licensed 1983 Centipede board game, explore designer Bruce Whitehill’s unusual arcade research, and see how the segmented centipedes, mushrooms, cannons, spider and scorpion translate to the tabletop.

The result includes some genuinely clever strategy and a wonderful sense of movement, although the spinner can occasionally leave one player at the mercy of some very unlucky turns. It may not recreate the speed of the arcade classic, but it clearly understands what made Centipede recognizable.
