Death Trap on Atari 2600 Is WAY Better Than You’ve Heard

Death Trap for the Atari 2600 has a pretty rough reputation, but after spending real time with it, I think that reputation misses what makes this game so interesting.

Released by Avalon Hill in 1983, Death Trap is a surprisingly sophisticated score chase built around a finite mission. You’re not just trying to survive until your reflexes fail — you’re trying to complete the mission as efficiently as possible, while managing damage, guiding your own torpedoes, avoiding shrinking shields, and maximizing your score along the way.

In this Friday Plays, we take a closer look at one of the Atari 2600’s more unusual and overlooked games and find out why Death Trap deserves a lot more credit than it usually gets.
